Are you using Vista or XP?

As long as you didn't drop it while it's writing, the hard drive should be good.
    1. Can you hear the drive spinup?
    2. Does the drive showup in windows computer management but not under "my computer" ? If it does, you might need to add a drive letter.
    3. If it shows up in computer management as unallocated or "raw" then you need to run a scandisk with the box to fix errors checked.
    4. If the drive spinsup but doesn't show up in computer mangement or "my computer" then you might have a bad hard drive enclosure. You can try and remove the drive and slaving it into the computer.

Don't worry about the data, as long as the drive isn't physically damaged (bad heads/motor/circuit board) all the data should be recoverable. You can use the free "testdisk to run more indepth repairs and to recover data from it.

looks like im gonna have to get a bit more technical now and start backing things up which is a pretty daunting thing to do with someone as inept on pcs as me. anyway cheers like i said;)
