Why are burnt DVD RW disks being 'seen' as blank CDs now?

I have a LITE-ON DVDRW SHM-165P6S (about 1 and a half years old) and could write to both DVD and CD previously. I wrote to a DVD+R some time back and could read it, but now suddenly I cannot. A friend copied that DVD+R to a DVD+RW but I cannot read that either - both discs are 'seen' as blank! Though one can clearly see the written 'band' on the disc.

However a normal DVD (like a movie) is seen correctly and I can play it too.
And even more strangely, the other day I was given another DVD+R to read and when I first tried it, it came up as a blank CD and then I tried again and the disc was 'seen' correctly...

I have since tried re-loading the problem DVD's X times but still nothing.

What has happened and how can I fix it?
All CDs are read fine and burning to CDs is also still fine - using Nero.
And I tried to use Nero to copy the DVD - Nero 'sees' the track written to the DVD but when asked to copy it, it fails...
Have used DVD identifier ... all seems fine.

    Any solutions?
    Much appreciated :)
    Thank you
    Andrea

How about something simple like "replace the device"??

Everything you have stated is symptomatic of a device going/has become defective.

It is very possible that a DVD-RW drive can continue to function for one type media but not for another.

    Think "Occam's Razor"
