im not sure when this started happening but recently my computer only connects through the internet via firefox. IE and other browsers wont work, some programs that access online for updates dont work aswell. I've tried working it out but i cant find the problem.

    checked for viruses....nothing
    malware/spyware...nothing
    turned off firewall....nothing

my ps3 and my other laptop work perfectly, both IE and Firefox work on the other laptop.

the oldest restore point is much help to me, and recently my firefox installed an update and right after it stopped working.

im running vista on an hp laptop

    Anyone got an idea?

    Thank you!!!

Could be a mis-configured proxy. Open Explorer and select tools, internet options, connections, LAN settings, and make sure none of the boxes are ticked. If you are behind a proxy, or are unsure, select automatically detect settings. Out of curiosity, can your MSN connect to the net? Generally this and other update programs look to Explorer for their connection settings.

Hmm, it could be that your firewall is blocking Explorer from connecting to the internet. You could also try re-installing explorer.

well thats what i thought, so i turned off the firewall, closed any malware/spyware,anti-virus protector, just anything that may interfere with the connection. Still nothing worked.

the thing that really troubled me was that, when firefox updated, immediately after it restarted itself it was automatically blocked. i got no prompt if i wanted to block it.

do you think i should take this to virus and spyware section?

Hmm, just one thing. Did you turn off your firewall, i.e. right click on it and select close, or did you disable it, i.e. right click and select disbale or something similar? Sometimes I've turned off my firewall and the thing is still blocked. Wheras I disable it and it works.
