Highest Ripping Speeds

    Just got a new system built guys

    Amd 3200+
    K8T Neo-FIS2R (Mobo)
    512 Corsair XMS PC3200
    Lite ON LDW-411s
    Hitachi 80 gig SATA

    Brought over from a old System my TI 4600 waiting for Half Life or DOOM to actually come out before i get a new vid card LOL. but i want the fastest DvD Rom for ripping so im not always useing my burner all the time, i know i will need a firmware hack probilly so whats up guys who has the fastest?!?!?

    The Lite On 166S is great for ripping and goes for about $30. Mine will get up to almost 14X on certain movies, no firmware hack required. I've read Toshiba makes some great DVD-ROMs too.

    Good olde Pioneer 116 rips DVD-5 discs at 8-11x and >8GB DVD-9 discs at 6-8x. Just a suggestion if you find some second-hand stuff lying around. Pioneer drives are very easy in region-free sense as there's always a hacked firmware available, no matter what RPC-1 site you visit :)

    When you region free the drive does that also unlock the drive speed?

    six.6.six: The drive read speed is unlocked already out of the box -- the 116 is a DVD-ROM drive, not a DVD burner and quite old, I bought mine in early 2001 (700+ movies ripped with the drive and still going :).

    Ok my ddv-rom only reads a 2x what can i do to bost that speed thanks, DVD8MAN

    dvd8man: Is your DVD-ROM drive faster than that, i.e. marketed as "16x" or something similar or is it just simply darn old 2x drive? If latter, go to store and buy new one. If its faster than that, but allows you to rip only at 2x, you might want to use google to see if there are hacked firmware patches avail to your drive in order to override the ripping speed restriction.

    Remember also that by pathing your firmware you can damage your drive permanently and we -- or anyone else as well -- wont take any responsibility, not even the manufacturer, if you mess up the patching.

    My dvd rom is a 16x LG 6CC-4320B it is a combo drive I have had for a while it is soposed to be 32x10x40x16x which means it writes at 32x rewrites at 10x and reads cds at 40x and is a dvdrom at 16x. Which I bet you already knew that. Thanks DVD8MAN

    My cheapo 16x LG DVDROM which doesnt read +R discs (even though its supposed to), managed to get 12x-14x all the time, no hackin no nothin :)
