freeware MPEG to AVI converter

Hi,

Can anyone recommend a good working piece of software, that is also freeware, that will convert MPEGs to AVI?

I have 6 MPEGs that I need to convert to AVIs, join together and burn to a DVD.

Hi cyprusrom, that is an excellent piece of software. Worked well, however, when I have followed the tutorial on the site for joining AVIs I have encountered an error:

"The audio streams have different data formats"

What can I do with this now? I have 5 AVIs that I would like combined into one.

Load the resulting AVIs in GSpot and see if there is a difference between them(video resolution, audio bitrate-VBR/CBR...).

 

This seems to work:

For EACH of the two files, do the following:

1) Load file into VirtualDub
2) Set "Video" to "Direct Stream Copying"
3) Set "Audio" to "Full Processing Mode"
4) From the "Audio" dropdown menu, select "Compression"
5) Select, for example, 22,050Hz
6) From the "Audio" dropdown menu, select "Conversion"
7) If necessary, put a checkmark next to "Display all formats"
8) Select your preferred sampling rate from amongst the, for example, 22,050Hz .MP3 rates listed
9) Click on "OK"
10) Save with a new filename

I seem to be having quite a bit of a sync problem now, the video and sound seem to be a bit out of sync. Not really watchable.

Do you have any tips to re-sync them, if that's possible.

I am using VirtualDub 1.6.19. All 5 AVIs were joined together using this software, i've tried joining them again but the same problem happened.

Any help appreciated.

Are the AVis in sync before you join them?

 

Good point, i've just looked at the single AVIs (which themselves were converted from MPEGs) and they are out of sync.

The original MPEGs are in sync, so the "Any Video Converter" software seems to be losing the synchronisation between the audio and video somewhere.

Any ideas how to get around this?

I'd try AVIDeMux. AFAIK it has a delay filter for the audio and you can adjust the synch.

 

Is the audio delay constant or progressive? Some converting software have issues when encountering VBR audio.

 

ahem.. point being missed here.. mpegs to be joined then burned to dvd.. why convert them??

join with avidemux.. then just author and burn... I haven't seen any mpeg but dvd compliant 2 for ages.

 

That is indeed an option that totally makes sense,was gonna suggest but I thought he/she might want to play the resulting avi using a Divx compatible player. If those 6 mpegs are one hour episodes lets say, might be hard to squeeze them onto one DVD-video compilation(and still having some "quality", but would easily fit as a data DVD to be played with a Divx player.
