Hi all Iv got hold of a pc from where i work, the boss said I could have it. I personally dont need it but he was going to throw it away, i dont like to waste anything. A week later my aunts pc packs in, so I said she can have my works one. So iv backed up her stuff on my hard drive and formatted hers ready to install xp on the works pc, The problem is the works pc wont recognise her hard drive, yet when i set it as a slave and connect it to my computer it recognises it no problem. The bios screen on the works one sees it as a unknown device? Anyway to sort this? any help will be apprieciated.
Possibly the PC is too old and won't recognize the newer hard drive. You haven't included enough information to say for sure. How old is the PC from work?
Dailun - sorry my bad, yeah its pretty old its a Dell Pentium 4 1.8ghz it has a 512mb chip and a 256mb chip, SDram not DDR or newer It came with windows 2000, so its safe to assume its around 9yrs old Killer bug - Her hard drive is a western digital 200gb, the manufacturing date of the harddrive is 2004 so from what you both said, the pc could be too old and the harddrive might be too big..... well thanks for the input guys (or gals) shes gunna have to buy a new pc.if your wondering what happend to her other one she had a power surge and blew pretty much everything on the motherboard, s*it happens i guess. Thanks again
Get a 20$ USB ide/ata/sata/miniata to USB adapter I use them to trouble shoot and archive HDDS http://www.directron.com/cbisatau2.html http://www.directron.com/usbdsc5.html Mind you for older drives you'll have to toy with the jumpers because I swear IDE/ATA has a mind of its own sometimes. But I love the one I got it works well. Also if the HDD is in but not showing the partition might be friend and you'll have to use the manufacturers software to recert it or format it. But with the USB device you just install the drivers(XP should have them automatically) and then bring up disk management or whatever ti is on 2K and format it. I use Acronis Disk Director myself they also have a bootable disc but USB support is iffy.
Il see if she is willing to buy the usb adapter, im pritty sure shes gunna buy a new pc, hers was pretty old anyway, she was on about getting a new one before hers got fooked! Thanks for your input anyway
