I don't know where to post. I hope this is the right place. Please redirect me if it is not.

Recently I booted up my computer and I was getting an error message from Norton that said auto protect experienced and unexpected error and gave the error code 0x800705B4 and a link to click on for support info. The anti-virus wasn't working and neither was the firewall. I was also getting another one stating that I needed to register. When I clicked the link on the error message for support info my Firefox browser just continually had the circle circulating. It never connected. I tried IE. Same thing. So I decided to to turn off the modem and just burn a DVD that I copied for the time being but it wouldn't show the screen that shows your files to navigate to. I also noticed that if I click on "my computer" it just has the flashlight continually searching and never shows my drives, etc. I was also getting a message from Windows Defender that a there was a command line error or someting like that and it needed to close.

I can click on "my control panel" and if I click on "Network Connections" it wasn't showing anything in the folder. It was blank and gave a message...I forgot what it said but, I Googled it and found something to try which was to bring up the command line and type regsvr32 netshell.dll and hit enter, then type regsvr32 netcfgx.dll and hit enter and then regsvr32 netman.dll and hit enter and reboot. I did so and that brought my icons in the folder back. However I was still not getting connected to the internet and getting those messages from Norton and all the rest I mentioned. I Googled some more stuff on my other computer by the T.V. and decided to put in my Windows XP CD and do a repair so that it can replace anything that might have gone missing or corrupt. A message came up at one point that said, The File 'nvnetbus.sys on NVIDIA Network Bus Installation Disc# 1 is needed. I didn't know what to do. It was asking me to navigate to the file it is in and click ok. I put in my motherboard disc thinking it might be asking for files on that. Nothing. So I just canceled that part and continued on. When it was all done, I put my motherboard disc in again and installed the drivers again. I'm still getting the same problems and now I can't even bring up the Nero interface. Whaaaaa! What the heck is going on? I'm trying to job hunt and need to access my resume and cover letters pronto as I am out of $$$. I thought I'd copy it to disc and bring it to the other computer but I can't even send the files to the D:\ drive.

Now my Windows and motherboard doesn't have all the updates it had 'cause of the repair and still has the same problem.

It seems like the drivers that access the internet and disc drives aren't working or something. Please help me. I'm am at a loss on what to do. Also I had previously done scans with Ad-aware, Malwarebytes, Windows Defender, Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool, Spybot Search and Destroy, SUPERantispyware and Norton Anti-Virus and nothing was found but some cookie stuff if I remember correctly.

If you have have access to a linux livecd (Linux OS will run off the cd and won't install on your hard drive), try to boot your computer with that and see if you can connect to the internet with linux. If the linux livecd won't connect you maybe your built-in LAN has gone bad. It has happened to me before with previous nforce motherboards the LAN going out on me. A replacement PCI LAN card cost about $10.00.

Also make sure that the LAN cable is actually transmitting a signal.

Oooo.. I have seen 20 or so like this in the last month.. all of a sudden some new malware is about trashing XP.. I have a funny feeling it's M$ update related..

The only realistic option is to actually wipe C and reinstall from scratch.. now that isn't as easy as it sounds because these motherboards are built for fista and xp doesn't have the right bus drivers.. let alone any drivers for the network and sound hardware. You might get away with using the generic windows drivers.. and then go hunting for the proper drivers from asus.

Well, I wound up calling Microsoft support and I had a gentlemen help me via remote access for the past two days. They started by having me stop service on the WIA or WMI image blah, blah. I was then able to access the internet. He said that three of the Microsoft services where conflicting with each other and he set them back to their default values and then I was able to access my drives in "My Computer" again instead of it just searching and searching.

When we turned third party services back on that he had turned off while troubleshooting and rebooted we were getting screen freezes. He found a lot of .dll files were missing and downloaded them from some site and installed them and that seemed to fix the freezing problem. I have downloaded all my updates again from microsoft.com one at a time with many computer restarts and reinstalled my Norton Internet Security 'cause we had uninstalled it first thing off the bat. It is scanning right now and so far as only found a cookie.

I uninstalled my Nero 7 as it no longer came up and I'm going to reinstall it and then see if I can burn disc. Currently if I right click on "My Computer" and select properties the general tab only shows how much memory I have under 'computer' and no longer shows the processor info. I will email him to let him know it's still not showing it so he can remote me again and fix it. Currently I'm not able to burn files to disc using the windows burning engine so if the Nero unistall/reinstall doesn't fix this I will have to let him know this as well. Also if I go to "Control Panel">"Network Connects">right click on one of the connections and select properties and the the advanced tab it says"Windows cannot Display the Prperties of this connection. The windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) informations might be corrupted...". So, I will have to tell him about that. But I can access my drives and the internet now. I'll let you know how the other issues turn out.

I has also updated IE6 to IE7 awhile back and apparently it didn't update correctly and it was still IE6 I was using but showed as IE7. After I updated it to IE7 this time it was getting stuck at the search bar when it was scanning for needed updates. I'll have to tell him about that too.

No real definition on what caused this but since all my scans were clean before and this happened after an automatic update from Microsoft when I shutdown I suspect that was the cause.

In the trade (pc repairers on the cheap "pirates'r'us") we call it norton chocolate fireguard.. get avg8 free and ccleaner.. perhaps malwarebytes as well.. don't pay for something which is shown time and time again to be a waste of money and confidence.

check out http://www.dll-files.com/ for missing files.. bet that's where nice M$ man went XD

why are you installing nero7? .. unless you make slideshow dvd's it's pretty pointless.. better free software is available which doesn't insist on using it's own aspi drivers (and screwing up drives in the process on some odd hardware) Try the free tools like dvd flick and imgburn .. with a few friends from the FOSS world you will get better functionality.

I would still wipe the machine and install M$ again.. because once it breaks it stays broke ;)
