hello recently i bought an IDE/SATA to Usb Adapter Similar to this one - http://img.alibaba.com/photo/511420...SB_to_IDE_SATA_Converter_Transfer_Cable_.jpg,

I have checked online and everywhere so far has said drivers are only needed with windows 98se, but when i plug it in it says device is not recognised, i have tried this on both XP and vista systems, i have also tried attaching several devices to it and neither of them worked either.

    humm....
ok, I have a IDE HDD internal(not for a laptop, for a desktop) which I want to see the info inside.
    I have this cable only.

I want to hook up the usb to my laptop cuz I don't have a desktop anymore. I hook it up and my laptop say that USB Device Not Recognized.

Is there anything else I need or a different cable?
SO basicly I'm trying to treat a IDE Internal HDD as a External(portable) HDD to view on my laptop.

for a desktop ide or sata drive to be connected & seen by the laptop means the use of 2 cables. 1 cable basically what you posted but the other to an external power supply as 3.5" drives need 12v to run whereas laptop drives only need 5v. all usb ports only have 5v in them so don't have enough power to run desktop drives.

Good luck with that,i bought a similar sort of unit that came with the power adaptor luckily it cost stuff all, needless to say it was bloody useless it would'nt detect thru the usb port on any of my comps,my advice get an external housing,my preference is "black cyclone",there are two types i bought the one that can take IDE & SATA drives,STLab make something similar it's alluminium & can be fully stripped apart only leaving the base, great for testing hdd's,this is the best way for reliablilty, well that's my 50cents worth,of coarse it's 50 cents 5 cents won't get ya noth'n these days :p

You could also get a USB connected 5 1/2"drive enclosure which would hold a HDD or ODD. You might also need to check the recommended setting for the Jumper on the HDD. But yes you will need power source like ddp said with that dongle you got.

tandoorin, in this case that is not the issue but the lack of power to the drive is.

I received my power supply for HDD to jump kick it and it worked!!!

I was able to view the internal HDD as if it was a portable or external type.

You can't just live off of the usb and no power. eBay sells them cheap like $14 for a complete kit.
