   is it possible to jailbreak 2nd gen that has 2.2.1 on it?

   Yes the 2.2.1 firmware have been jailbroken, both my kids jailbroak their ipods, i jailbroke mine but didn't really worked for me so i put apples firmware back on it,. you can go to youtube and look for the video tutorials, is fairly simple, Good Luck.
