Is this the burner firmware? The manufacturer may issue new firmware to correct a problem with a particular type of disk. The firmware contains information about how to best burn a particular disk (the ID number on the disk identifies the factory that the disk came from). Unless there is a compelling reason, I wouldn't routinely update firmware.
