Hi this is my first time modding my case so i'm a little unsure on what i should do... First of all i have these fans that came out of a machine. They're the same as case fans, except the connectors are positive and negative wires and don't connect to anything in the tower. On the back of the fans it says "220 v , 50/60 hz , 50 w ." I was wondering would it be possible to connect these fans through my psu (400 w) and simply cut some holes in the case to mount them on. The fans are about 20 cm in width 25 cm in height. Thanks for any help in advance
PSU outputs are all DC Your fans are AC fans. In order to run those fans you would have to pull power from the mains at the input. You will have no way of controlling the power unless you install a seperate switch for each fan. It's probably cheaper to buy new fans and use your AC FANS for house fans or something else.
DC case fans are so cheap, you should just buy some normal ones. Running an AC component in a PC other than its power supply (which is a sealed unit) is unsafe, and I do not recommend it.
It is possible to hook them up so that they will start/shutdown with the system. The trick is to get an AC relay that activates from 12v or 5v dc input...when the system is on, the relay is on and the AC power goes to the fan. One bonus is that the fan will not usa ANY of your 400W power supply (well, maybe about 1/2 watt for the relay) I would not recomend this for any fan widely available in DC, but if these 200MM fans are good quality units (many AC fans have better torque & airflow than DC fans), it may be worth the effort. ...Of course there is significant danger any time you play around with AC current; 110V is more than enough to kill and you have twice that. Even if a shock does not kill you, it can cause significant memory loss or other injury. I am in no way responsible if your inexperience gets you killed, injured, or braindead.
ahh i see. Yeah i was unsure weather the PSU would be able to run the fans but thanks for all the help i think it would be better if i just bought some.. cheers
