I've been using ONLY DVD+R discs for my movies because I heard that's what you should use if you wanted it to work in most players. My friend uses DVD-R discs, and he hasn't had any complaints. The DVD-R discs seem to be cheaper all the time. So, what is the main difference between the two formats ?? Am I wasting my money buying DVD+R ?? Thanks.
If you want your DVD to be compatible with most players, even older ones, use DVD-R. If your burner supports booktyping it will booktype the +R to DVD-Rom which will play in most players. The standard format for the industry is -R that is why players will pretty much always play that format. Personally, I use -R it is just personal preference.
Benq,Plextor,LG,Liteon,and some other booktype capable drives: Plus format and set them to dvd-rom and you'll have superior compatable backkups like arniebear posted. Most other brand names-Pioneer,NEC,TSST, Dash format. What works good for 1 person,may not for another unless they both have identical model # of dvd-rw drives. When you see an error display message of: No Disc,Dirty Disc,Wrong region,Wrong format,or Illegal disc,then usually it's the compatability issue with the format of media you are using. Myself,Plus format. My bro,Dash format. Includes dvd movies and games. He's gotten his dash backups to play in some picky drives that wouldn't recognize my dash backups. Plus and dash are the same price in local brick and mortar stores like bestbuy,staple's,etc. Not so on the web. Another thing,the higher quality Ty watershields,and full hub shiny inkjet printables also only available in dash format via the web.
Thanks for your replies. I was just wondering if I should try some TY -R Shiny 100 cake for $30 at SMStore. The cheapest I've bought TY +R Shiny 100 cake is at SMStore for $40. And I haven't had any probs with the +R. So I didn't want to be stuck with a whole spindle that didn't work for me.
What's the brand name and Model# of your burner and your buddie's? I'd give that 100 pk of dash tys a go. That's a 25% savings.. I used to load up locally on the awesome and now distinct Sony Ty's. These cost under $25 per 100 pk. Ty media,locally,and same price as their dash format. If they do give you problems,sell them back to your buddy!! You could sell them back here at AD or ebay. Shouldn't be no problem unloading a 90+ tub of Ty-G02/G03! Without getting stuck with a large tub of media that may not perform properly, you could locate a small batch of dash verbatim and test burn a couple.. Easy to find at most Brick&Mortar stores. Test them on any drive that you will play your backups on,yourself and your buddy/ies. Avoid the No Disc error.
I have ordered hundred of TY-R's and not one bad burn in them, all my burner love them........and I got several different makes, even my oldest burner that has not had a fw update in years will burn them. I highly recommend them.
If you talking about the 8X TYG02s, get them. Almost any drive will burn them well... new and old. My Pioneer and Optiarc drives will burn them at 12X with excellent results. If you have a newer burner, don't buy into the 'burn them at half speed' crap.
