    Download and install Imgburn.
With no disk in the burner, run Imgburn and elect to 'Write files/folders to disc'

    http://www.afterdawn.com/software/cdr_software/cdr_tools/imgburn.cfm

The letter that identifies a valid burner should be shown (mine is 'E').
If there is no burner identified, then stop.

    Insert a blank DVD.
    Click on the 'Device' tab.
The blank disk should be recognized and information about it should be shown.

If the disk is recognized, either open or drag a file onto the window (a small image .jpg or .bmp or text file)
Set the burning speed to a moderate setting and click the button to burn.
If the disk burns ok, use Windows Explorer to examine it and test the file.
