making homemade =rw discs compatible with players

My PHILIPS dvdr985 produces +rw discs that are NOT playable on other dvds. I prefer NOT to finalize the disc because I want to retain the ability to add material or rerecord in whole or in part as in tape. Is ther a process, product, software I can use to solve this issue. My computer does not care, one of my players does not and the other does. The current crop of players do not play them either. Are there any specific brands and models that will? Would an older model be a better bet? Any help welcome.
