I strongly advise against updating a BIOS unless it is absolutely necessary.

i believe it is. i have been experiencing BSOD, unexpected shut downs.it cant be the hard drive as ive connected it up to my other system and it works fine. i have everything at stock. it takes forever to start up. it sometimes stays locked at the boot menu. have to power reset. i was reading on the bios update that it fixes data corrupion and some other problems that they've had with these boards.

Potentially, but these are all problems inherent to the nforce 680i chipset as a whole, not any specific board. Realistically, when a 680i starts to go bad, the best option is to sling it. If you want to last-ditch the BIOS though, carefully comb through XFX's website to make sure you have exactly the right version, their motherboard codenames aren't the clearest.
