I have a USB file share cable but I have to unplug it when I am done getting a file off the old PC I use to record streams, and I am tired of having to plug it in, is there a program that I can install on each PC that allows me to share files via a network? I hate windose networking setup with a passion it just never works for me.
Theres no way to bypass windows network setup. All files going though the LAN need to go through windows. Usually it's quite simple, you only have to set it up once than reboot. All you need to connect 2 computers through the LAN is a crossover cat5 cable. All 4 of my computer are connected through the LAN with no problems. I use an airlink101 router to connect all the computers together. I use wires, but it can also be done wireless but would be more expensive. I also have a small NAS unit (connected to the LAN) the netgear sc101 (paid 29.00 for it). Files from any computer can be saved on it and retrieve from any of the other computers, very useful device. I've had it running 24/7 nonstop for almost 2 years, still has the original 200gb drive I put in it. http://kbserver.netgear.com/products/storagecentral.asp The final option is to just use an external usb drive, that's how I transfer large video files from my media pc to another pc. It's quicker than using the LAN. For small files I just use my 16gb usb pen drive.
