It took me *a long* time to find this simple answer. There is a free decoder at SourceForge.Net to convert .TiVo files from the TiVo DesktopToGo to regular .mpg files. Then, someone created a simple GUI for the decoder. I used it and it works great!

    Here is the SourceForge.Net : http://sourceforge.net/projects/tivodecode/

Here is the VB.NET 2005 GUI wrapper: http://www.gmonweb.com/portal/CodingFun/Downloads/tabid/54/Default.aspx

I'm writing this topic because I use AfterDawn.com a lot for answers to video related questions. When I accidentally uninstalled the TiVo decoder, I couldn't find the application to re-install it. After an hour of searching, I finally found the links. I was a little surprised that these links were not already on AfterDawn.com. The next time I look for it (computer crash, etc), this answer will be available for me here.

Thank YOU very much. In the past I was using the Prish Dump utility to remove the TiVO shroud to make a clean MPEG video I could edit and burn to DVD. But that Utility became obsolete. The Video Re Do Suite works well, but the finished DVDs -- while they "look" fine, seem much smaller (less GB, MB) than before. I do this with great, old, olde! videos. An old (1930-40s)movie in Technicolor and of 2 hours duration or so would exceed the 4.37 GB capacity of a single DVD+R media, so I would use a DL disk. Videos of this size made with Video Re-Do Suite look quite good but take much less space. Why would that be? I asked Video Re Do and they say only that all resultant DVDs
made with Video Re Do Suite are SD (Standard Definition.) They look good in viewing, but are they compressed? Halp! I'm a newbie. Talk slow!

I've downloaded the item from Soundforge. What does it open with?
How do I get it to open? I am a naif and I have a flock of TiVO shrouded MPEG video files I'd like to burn to DVD
