Are there media conflicts with the Hp dvd writer 200j ? I have tried Memorex and TDK, and so far the only DVD to succesfully be noticed and burnt was the origonal HP DVD+R that came with the PC...
Have I missed out on something?

Hi Cloud130, Burners and Players can be media sensitive. First check the HP site and check to see if you have the latest Firmware for your drive. Then buy some Ritek blanks. They seem to be one of the best out there. Cheap isn't the best way to go. Memorex doesn't make their blank discs, so you never know what you will get. Some on-line media stores like Meritline sell sample packs of different brands of media just for this problem. It lets you try several to see what one works best.

I've got the same drive and same problems:
The cheapo k-hypermedia dvds from officemax work for me and I've gotten great deals on phillips media from office depot. Both work just fine. Usually I'll get 1 coaster per 25
Memorex media make nice coasters...but are useless otherwise

I just had one more question. When I purchased the memorex and Tdk media they said 4x compatible. Now my dvd writer(piece of crap)writes at 2.4x. Does that mean I need to get media at 2.4x or can I still use the 4x media?
Also I looked at meritline.com and saw some good deals for some ritek media, but I don't want drop another $50 if I can still some how use the memorex or TDK Dvd's. Please Help!!!!

Hi Guys
For the HP DVD200i to work with the newer media a firmware update is needed. This is a quote from the upgrade page on HP's website Firmware 1.65
The upgrade contains all previous firmware revision changes and includes the following features:
New laser write strategies for 8x DVD+R, 4x DVD+R and 4x DVD+RW media. Without this new firmware version, the DVD200 may experience incompatibilities with these media types.
The firmware update will NOT allow the DVD200 drive to write at 4x or 8x speeds. The DVD200's maximum recording speed is 2.4x no matter what recordable DVD media is utilized.
Write strategies for high speed CD-RW media improved.
Further error checking refinement for media incompatibility.
Other general errors resolved.
Search HP's site for the DVD200i and you will find the firmware upgrade
I hope this helps

thanks of info chthomson, but my dvd writer is the 200j not 200i. Is this some weird font issue hp has or can I use that firmware update. On another note I successfully burned a dvd with a couple of memorex dvd+r's with no problems. The funny thing is when you open the jewel case and read the insert it goes with it tells you you should upgrade your firmware before you can use the dvd+r. I wonder why this in not on the outside of the box before I buy it.

Hi Guys, I use to have the 200i. When you upgrade the firmware it will change the model to 200j. Its the same thing.
Jerry
PS, I remember that the first thing mine told me to do was check for firmware updates after the install.
