PC SHUT OFF INSTANTLY? WTF?!

OK the past few days my PC was just shutting off without warning after 5 mins of so, as if someone has just pulled the plug. the prob kept getting worse and it just sht off after bootup so I decided to open it up an check out the problem. I completely dissasembled it and cleaned each part (I used an antistatic wrist strap and a mat). I took off the heatsink on the pc and the graphics card, cleaned it out and put some more thermal paste on. I put the whole thing back together and booted up. The same thing happened. I didnt mess about with it before It f*cked up, the only thing different it the CPU fan. the fan was a bit damaged so I replaced it with a case fan just to see if it would boot up. I connected it to a case fan port on the mobo instead of the CPU fan port. The fan isnt much smaller, and ive done it before. The heatsink isnt even warming up so it isnt overheating, i dont know what the issue it.

 

Well, there could be a whole load of causes. but changing your title may help and could attract more people to help

well can you start by telling me what make PC it is.

my guess already could be a driver failing. are there any error messages appearing or maybe the blue error screen (BSOD)

Changing fans wont affect it unless your shorting it for some reason.

going back to safety basics, did you use precautions while inside your pc?

 

Yep, but it was happening before I even opened it up. I used an ESD wrist strat and an ESD mat, both plugged into the earth socket in my wall. You cant be safer than that.

 

I was faced with a very similar problem fairly recently. I re-seated the cpu and applied thermal paste. Removed and cleaned up the motherboard chip heat sink and again applied thermal paste. I didn't notice that some of the mobo capacitors (caps) had swollen. The symptoms experienced seem identical. It may also be worth while using an eraser on the contacts of your ram chips. (thanks to ddp for that one)

Ive already cleaned the whole thing out, but ill try and clean the ram. As for the heatsink, I have already taken it out, cleaned it and put new thermal paste on it. Im hoping its something to do with the graphics card cos that give ma an excuse to upgrade lol. anyway I dont know what else to do?

 

Definitely give the ram and graphics card contacts a going over with an eraser.

Anyway I tried the RAM thing and it didnt work. ill try the graphics now but I dont think there is any point. Ive allready cleaned each contact on everything, its just stopped working. If I knew which part it was Id happily replace it but I cant work it out.

If you have more than one stick of ram, remove one and re-boot. If that doesn't work then remove it and insert the other etc etc and re-boot. Eliminate the obvious possibilities first.

Its an upgraded iQon from tesco. lol i know.

Anyway ive added an extra dvdrw, a Radeon X1650 sapphire pro graphics card and thats about it.

It has 2x 512mb ddr2 533 sticks of buffalo ram, a pentium D dual core CPU, and a Gigabyte GZME 819 mobo.

It has a memory card reader but that stopped working a few years ago somehow and now shows up as a floppy drive xD

I dont have parts to test it out, otherwise I would.

Im taking it to the PC shop in a few days, the guy there always helps me out and never rips people off. Its more his hobby than his business.

If you have any ideas until then, Id appreciate it.

Nothing is wrong with my sig. The joke is funny because its not racist. If I wrote something like "What do you call a brown guy flying a plane - bin laden" THAT would be racist. For the record, im a brown guy so thats why I used that as an example.

as for your problem, could you try and swap the ram between slots and see if they fix your problem. maybe one of your RAM sticks has gone. im sure you could even ask one of your friends to borrow a better stick of RAM for comparison

There was nothing offensive in that joke, and calling a black guy a pilot isnt racist, not is calling anyone of any other race flying a plane a pilot. The whole point of the joke was that its funny because you expect it to be racist but its not. I heard it on a documentary on the BBC about the modern world when they were talking about planes.
