hi, I am trying to use (for the first time) a USB to Serial Convertor with Xp but no luck at all. I downloaded the driver from the CDbut when I try to flash the attached box it says failed. When I am downloading there are 4 Com Ports and I've tried all 4. I would be grateful if anyone can let me know what I am doing wrong as this looks like it should have been straightforward enough.

    Thanks

Trying to use it or trying to install the software?

A COM port assignment will not be made until the driver software is successfully installed.

I would first check in device manager to see that the driver software is successfully installed. (i.e. no yellow marks or unknown devices)

USB to serial adapters typically use COM ports in the high numbers, 9 or above.

Once (you think) the adapter is properly installed, you can check the functionality by opening a program like hyperterm with local echo turned OFF. Short pins 2 and 3 on the serial port and characters will echo back as you type them if you've selected the correct port.
