Ok, I have a 300gb Maxtor HD that has Windows XP installed on it as it was previously used in a desktop pc. I would like to re-format this drive and use it as an external HD (usb) for my laptop. When I get it all hooked up my computer doesn't recognize that it's there at all. So the real question is: how do I get it to recognize the drive?

Is it in device manager? If not, you probably have a bad USB adapter, cable, or port.

It's not in device manager. I've tried another usb cable and it doesn't work. I've also tested the usb port and it seems fine. Thanks for your help

have you tried the external drive on another computer? It might be the external drive enclosure circuity that is bad.
If the drive was working before, it should still be good and be recognize as soon as it's connected to the USB.
