I am looking to copy my old home VHS movies to DVD but I would like to edit them. In research I think I need a DVD recorder with a built in hard drive. My question is after I save the movie on DVD the hard drive and edit out the bad parts, will the finalized DVD be able to play on other family members DVD players? The DVD burner I now have will only allow edited movies to be played on the unit that I recorded it on. I need to make copies of the edited films for other family members.
In general, if the recorder burns standard DVD±R/RW disks in DVD movie format (a VIDEO_TS folder containing .IFO .BUP and .VOB file) they should play on a standalone player. In my own case, I burned DVD-RW disks in the recorder (my recorder does not have a hard drive).. I then ripped the disks on the PC, did some minor editing then re-authored the files back to DVD-R. The nature of the editing ensured that the files were not recoded and since they were still in compliant DVD format, the authoring program was able to create the required files very quickly.
