Hey, long time lurker, first time builder. I've got a Dell PC right now, and after comparing it to the prices of one you could build yourself, I'm shamed. Oh well, gotta start somewhere... On to the main reason im posting, after 3 years of 1.8GHZ and intergrated graphics (HXC) I wanna upgrade a little (understandably). Still being 2nd gen (PS2 FTW!) I need to catch up on some epic games i seem to be missing, primarily Fallout 3. Can anyone suggest a full setup I could get for $1000 to $1500 AUD (800 to 1200 USD) I dont do much video encoding or the like, just games a MS office. Ill probably be looking to run XP or 7 if it helps. Sorry if I'm a total NEWB and please tell me anything I've missed

That builds pretty good but I would just go ahead and get a 4870 1GB and a gigabyte motherboard over asus. The q9400 would be overall better it being a quad core but E8500 plays games better, you really cant go wrong with either. As for the gts 250, dont bother, both the 4850 and 4870 beat it. I would definately recommend Killerbug's Graphics card and motherboard. That Gfx isnt 100% neccissary but will last aloooong time, Its a very fast card that can play any game you throw at it. The motherboard is a must.... nuff said...
Lol? The GTS250 is a midrange offering at best, the 4870X2 is a top end product, triple the performance if not more. The Q9400 is overall a better CPU, especially with a 4870X2. The PSU and HDD are fine, but the Motherboard is ancient, and hasn't been on sale for months if not over a year. 1GB is also completely unnecessary on a 4850 (and a GTS250)
Well, I don't exactly know what prices are like over there without a common site to reference with. Choose what you can afford but I'm certain you can do better than a GTS250. What about an HD4870 or HD4890?
Is the 4890 $100 better then the 4870? Also the main supplier for my build will be a group called MSY; http://www.msy.com.au/Parts/PARTS.pdf Pain in the ass to look at but oh well.
The 4890 is alittle bit better than the 4870... no where near 100$ more. The 4870 would be the best choice cause it dosent seem like the 4870x2 within your price range.
I like your style. BUT if I get this chip that will cause my computer to come to life and impregnate my screen, will it play all the games a Ps3 will, over the next 3 or so years?
It will play some ps3 games, not all on high though. Over the next 3 years... almost impossible, a 4870x2 is a must for that long but people usually upgrade their graphics in that timespan as newer faster cards come out. in a few years the 4870x2 will be dirt cheap and you dont really need it now.
By the time it will be outdated, so will the rest of the system, you can't keep pace with hardware indefinitely. Three years is about right for a card like that.
Wow...australia sites are even worse than I thought. You might consider these guys: http://www.priceusa.com.au If that does not work for you, you could hire a USA courier service to recieve the packages and ship them out to you, this might be a bit cheaper if you are buying all the expensive bits from newegg.
International couriers to Australia from the US are BIG money. It's probably still cheaper to buy directly in Aus unless there's something they don't have yet.
It'll be more than 5% unless the order is vast. International couriers charge a lot more than that for that distance.
