Is ffdshow still (as of June 2009) "better" than DivX Pro for viewing .divx videos? FFDShow is free; DivX Pro isn't, but if DivX Pro consumes less resources and produces "better" looking and "better" sounding results than ffdshow, it's worth buying, right?

If ffdshow is the "better" choice, should I choose libavcodec or ffdshow's xvid codec for divx?

Right now I watch the occasional .divx video using Winamp 5.552 + ffdshow on Windows XP Pro SP3 and it all works without any problems. (I currently use libavcodec for DivX.) I'm just asking if I can make it easier on my PC and get video and audio I might prefer by purchasing DivX Pro. Thanks.

I thought Divx Pro only gave extra options during encoding.
There's no difference during decoding (playback).

In the Divx config, you can set options such as automatic deblocking,
deblocking with sharpening, etc,etc.

Divx handfles the audio? Since when? It's always been
ac3 (ac3filter or ffdshow) or mp3 (ffdshow or microsoft) decoder.

Thanks for your reply.

DivX Pro hypes "the DFX Audio Enhancer ($9.99) to DivX Player and get sharper, livelier sound from your videos." Note it's an add-on to the Player. Check their web site.

Do you have any advice on whether the libavcodec or the xvid codec is a better choice in ffdshow for watching .divx videos?

Hello - the Divx add-on sounds like a post processing effect
to "enhance" the sound. Perhaps something like WMP's SRS effects ?
Up to you whether you think it's worth it. Can you get a free trial ?

Regarding ffdshow /xvid playback. Can you see a difference on
the screen? If so, pick the one you prefer.
If there's no difference, FFDshow has had a good reputation for
being light on resources (less cpu) and is widely used for
playback. Libavcodec being the default, it's probably what most people
are using. Do you have a special reason to choose one over the other?

In my own situation, I use neither. I use the Divx playback filter
because it has Automatic deblocking, which you can turn on or off
from the icon in the lower right.
