I downloaded yellow dog linux and tried to install it on the PS3. Like a retard, I never looked at a tutorial and went to system settings and performed a quick format on the drive to allot 10gb to the linux os. I noticed then that my saves were gone because I never backed them up but my username was still there. I had mgs4 installed and it was deleted along with the saves. I read online that a quick format might only delete the file storage structure but not the files themselves so maybe there is a way I can restore the saves. I really am far in mgs4 and I want the saves badly. Does anyone know if there is a way to restore them? I would really appreciate any help. Thanks in advance!

I guess you could trying connecting the drive to your PC and use some data recovery software however I don't think you'll have much luck - sorry.

Your out of luck,the game saves are gone,you username was kept there because it isnt stored on the HDD.
