To access the shares on another pc within the lan, go to start, run (or you can do this in the address bar of any window or browser but sometimes that has problems) and type:

\\hostnameofpc (you can find the hostname of the pc you want to connect to by holding the windows key and pressing pause/break, then go to the computer name tab and it is next to "full computer name" (without the .)

It will then show you the available shares on that pc, or type:

    \\hostnameofpc\c$

Which lets you see the default share of the root of the c: drive (replace c with the letter of any other drives to access them)

A convenient thing to do is right click on the desktop, new shortcut, and put in the path of the share on another machine to create a little shortcut to it that you can always use.

Since the default permissions on a windows share are full control for everyone, in the event that you cannot connect to a share across the lan it is highly likely that it is a firewall issue stopping this (unless of course you have been changing the permissions). Turn off the firewalls on both pc's involved in the sharing and see if it works after that. Add an exception to your firewalls advanced rules to allow connections to and fro your lan pc's.
