I cant figure this one out. Some of my .mp4's play perfectly and others say that "The data type is not supported". Any idea why some play and others wont? How can this be fixed? Thanks for the assistance!

I researched this a little more and found that this is a common occurrence for PS3 owners. Many people say that the PS3 is picky about what mp4's it will play. The consensus was that if we could some how change the "wrapper" of the mp4 then it would play properly.

Any thoughts on this...

Its not the wrapper or container thats the problem, its the profile that the video stream has been encoded in.
You could use Yamb to demux to a raw X264 run it through TSmuxer at a main profile of 4.1, should sort you problem out.

Thanks I'll give it a try, but now I have a bigger problem. When VLC 1.0.0 RC was released I noticed that it had server capabilities. I messed around with it to try to use it instead of the PS3 media server which was a big mistake. Now I can't get my PS3 to recognize the media server at all. Not even WMP11 will show up. When I search for media servers I don't get any results. I have a 20GB ps3 with no wireless capabilities so I am hard wired with an Ethernet cable between my laptop and ps3. I uninstalled VLC and PS3 media severe and reinstalled in various orders. Nothing I do has any effect. I am about to wipe my computer just to get it back to the way it was. Does anyone out there have any ideas on how to fix this problem? Thanks to all.

I would try installing Tversity to see if it would work and if so then try a last reinstall of the PS3 Media server one last time before going for a reformat/reinstall of Windows.

Have you tried all of the various transcoding methods PS3 media server offers? It would be very odd if none of them could get it to play.
