I'm looking into building a pretty decent gaming machine/ video editing. I really want to upgrade from my old sony machine. I need suggestions on parts, but here is a layout of what I'm going to get. I would get a 4870x2 over the GTX285, Better and cheaper. Everything else looks good but you dont need a 1000w psu. A 850w corsair is more than enough, a 750w should even be able to handle that too and the HAF 932 is better than the 1200 overall for price and cooling. Make sure to get a quality heatsink and fan if your going to be overclocking.
For cooling i was looking at the Xigmatek Dark Knight or should I get the coolermaster V8? I've also looked at the Cooler Master 932 Haf but I was afraid that stuff might spill onto the top of the case because of the holes on the top for fan ventilation, else I'm probably going to get the HAF. But can I get an opinion between those cpu coolers, the v8 and the dark knight one? Or you could recommend a better one. Ok. Cas is a little overkill really, man, this case sure is becoming popular despite how expensive it is. I'd strongly advise against the GTX285, it's hugely expensive for how it performs. The EVGA board is also a bad idea. Not getting an optical drive? This is what I would choose at newegg: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835608007 The HAF is the case I have for my gaming PC, it is MUCH quieter than the 1200, and is realistically better designed, though I will grant you, it is more cheaply made. The holes at the top are just as present on the Antec case, and in fact the holes themselves are bigger on the Antec case which makes it more likely stuff can fall in.
using a samsung drive I got from my cousin so I'm fine with that, Thanks for the tips Sam. Could you give a reason why the EVGA board might not be the best? It seems like its a pretty decent board according to reviews?
Almost all EVGA boards in the past have been poorly design and had problems with longevity, but then they've all been nvidia boards in the past.
yes, nvidia chipsets didnt seem to work. but these baords are brilliant from what i have seen. change the GTX285 to the 4870x2, unless u really love nvidia, in which case spend the exrta for 2 285s ! the PSU is fine, but sam says it loud. instead of a veliciraptor, id say get a vertex 60GB for vista 64 and apps, and use the 1TB for games and stogare.
A Vertex SSD is substantially more expensive than a Velociraptor though, last time I checked. Do you not think spending an extra $100 on a PSU that isn't necessary is overkill then? An i7 and 4870X2 is fine on a decent 750W, with two 285s of course an 850 would be wiser.
oh no, i agree, but who knows, people spontaniously upgrade wasnt there like 9 months ago when i bought my 650w, you were saying there will never be a need for a 650w PSU?
I think I was more to the point that you wouldn't need a 650W PSU. 9 months ago I already had my 4870X2, and I think I was about to get the Q6600 as well.
