    hey people

ok i have a laptop that was bought for me unlucky for me it had vista and i just dont like it at all so...

i wanna put xp on it, i have an xp disc but when i put it in and load up vista install xp option is greyed out so...

then i tryed to to boot from disc in the bois but theres no disable sata option. i changed the boot proity to dvd drive and i put the xp disc in. the disc loads up and i go though the process until it says please use a full xp disc i only have the OEM version of it

the laptop is an acer aspire 3690 am using an OEM xp disc and the os on the laptop is vista home preiem. if anyone can help it would be great.

i heard that vista wont let you downgrade without a fight and am starting to find that out. also hope i posted in the right section :)

i've upgraded 6 laptops & 1 tower from vista to xp with no real problems except had to change sata to ide in bios in 2 laptops. who makes the xp cd because if not for laptop then you are dead in the water? can't use an oem disk except for the machine it was made for.

well.. the laptop did not come with a vista disc or a xp disc

i read that i could use nlite to add the feature to turn the sata drive off so vista had no say in the matter.

i heard from a friend that you cant downgrade from vista to xp unless its vista business i think or something along them lines... to bad you dont live near me lol :p

can you link me to a way of getting xp on it or even destorying vista completely so then the hdd is blank then i can put a boot disc in it

i have a pheniox bois on the motherboard and it is tradgic to say the least very few options on it so am at a lose... do you want pictures of the options on each screen of the bois so you can get a better idea of what i need to do

any help would begreat thanks i wanna get this sorted this weekend

It's nothing to do with Vista, Vista doesn't stop you downgrading, i don't really know why people get this in their heads...

As ddp said, you have an OEM disk, which means it can be used on one PC only (presumably it's already been used). It would say the same thing no matter what you tried to install it from, be it Window 95 or Windows 7.

Even if you do successfully downgrade to XP, you'll face problems with drivers unless Acer had an XP version of that model too.

The thing to do with Vista Business that your friend was referring to was an old initiative Microsoft used when Vista first came out where they would offer an XP downgrade for free to users of Vista Business / Ultimate if they requested it.

ok i have all the acer drivers for xp on a cd ready
i set it up to boot from disc then it works like normal but...

it asks me for a previous version of windows to show that i can downgrade cause i only have an oem disc. is there any way around this? without shelling out for another disc that i will not ever use ? thanks by the way :)

as that oem disk is not for that pc then you have 1 legal & 1 blackmarket option.

One would be buying it, one would be downloading the .iso ;)

But since you've got one, all is good.

Don't have a clue why it hasn't successfully burnt, mind... Did you manage to place the ISO on the disk as a file (like a storage disk) rather than burn the files contained within the ISO onto the disk?

Try using Imgburn ( http://download.imgburn.com/SetupImgBurn_2.4.4.0.exe - it's what i used to use on XP). Also, i always burn at the fastest speed and disks have always burnt fine, so try that instead.

Just put a blank disk in your tray, start Imgburn, choose "Write image file to disk", navigate to your .iso file under Source, and click the Write button ;)
