I did some searching on the forum and found a compatibility list for lockable hdds but they did not go beond 160. I was interested in putting at least a 200gb hard drive in my xbox, does any one know what models are lockable or where I can find a list?

it's important to lock it if you want to play xbox live and if you want to access your orig ms dashboard to change the settings (though you can still change the settings of the xbox indirectly using evox). how to lock it? use configmagic.

you'll still be able to access the msdash without using configmagic to lock. I do it everday with my 250gig maxtor.

But, correct me if I'm wrong, when you boot the original bios, it boots to the original msdash only recongizing the first 10gigs of the hdd (all of c e and x y z, and the remaining of the 10 on f).
Since the xbox has no idea that it's hdd is different (at this point, booting from original bios) it will continue it's locking/unlocking (so long as your hdd is lockable) as normal because it reads the lock/unlock code from the hdd on each boot. It's not as if the bios is specifically programmed to the hdd that came with the box.
So really, all you need to do is make sure you boot the original bios and that msdash is unmodified, obviousely (if it is modified, the retail disc will restore it anyway). Who cares if your chip is on or off at that point. It's not doing anything.
Please, if I'm and mistaken, let me know so I'll learn. But otherwise, this is what I've gathered so far.

thnx guys for all your help. I did everything you adviced me and i got it to work. I even got to see that configmagic is installed in my box.
Perhaps i've been a pain in the bu.. but like i said before i am newbie & want to learn more. I have been dealing with with this issue for one week >> Everything is working beautifully on my system (250gb HDD installed), but I noticed that after I ftp back my games, half of them have this weird looking lettering stuff under xbox games menu and doesn't play any of the games with this stuff. From my FlashFXP it shows everything is right & matches my backup files 100%(didn't get any error mssge when transferred). Any ideas on wht is going on? Is it my bios that needs an updated one & which on? or what could be the problem?
    inputs? thanx in advance!
