I recently bought some used Xbox HDD's from ebay that are locked. I rebuild pc's and would like to use them for that. How can I unlock them for PC use? Any help would be greatly appreciated. If this is somehow illegal, I apologize in advance.
you can get a win 98/xp boot disk and download some file to it so you can unlock it in DOS, you need the unlock key though search google.
put the xbox hdd in your xbox and run backup in evoX. Then ftp into your box and find the folder "backup" in c. there will be a file named hddinfo.txt which contains the hdd pass. It'll look something like this: 01:23:45:67:89:AB:CD:EF 01:23:45:67:89:AB:CD:EF 01:23:45:67:00:00:00:00 00:00:00:00:00:00:00:00 Remove the colons so it looks like this: 0123456789ABCDEF0123456789ABCDEF01234567000000000000000000000000 (I THINK you can also get the pass in configmagic) Then run hdunlock.exe (see pm) to unlock. You have to run hddisabl.exe (see pm again) to keep it from locking again on next restart.

hmmm... y'know, that is a problem; without having the original backup info (eeprom). I guess if you had the original mobo you could find the eeprom module and do a swap. Kinda messy but... Ok. there's actually a write up on that at xbox-scene. but, of course, you need the original mobo. Yeah... I'm not sure there's much you can do. hmmm... seems like there must be some kind of trick. But I don't know.
I have two xbox hdd. I have the orignal xbox for one of them but the other I do noy have. For me to unlock either I have to have the orignal mobo for one but not the other. I guess I can unlock one but not the other. TIA for any advice.
yeah, as far as I know, you won't be able to unlock the other hdd. I wonder if there is something you could run against the hdd once in the pc to determine the code? Or is the lock/unlock code "locked" up as well?
I would put in a compliant against the guy who sold them to you - they are useless to you - get a refund!! The situation is this - there are two common methods to unlock the HD - both require that the HD is in the machine - in this case the XBOX that locked them. The easiest is to use the slayer CD to unlock the drive automatically. For some reason though people still use the slayer CD just to have a look at the 50 odd character unlock code - write it down and then use DOS in their PC with an unlock program to manually unlock it... why would you bother?? Either way without the original xbox you can not unlock or get access to the code to unlock the drives. Each code is unique to the xbox that locked the HD in the first place... The guy is almost criminal selling you the locked drives - would be like selling concert or lotto tickets after the event is over...
I have the same problem dude, but it was my fault, I was modding an xbox for someone, had to get it done really quick that day, so I swapped out the hdd and dvd drives, and let them have my mobo, pro was I forgot to unlock my 80gb hdd!! arghhhh, tis ok though, Ill see em next week, so Ill take it to them and unlock it.
What if someone writes a script the tries all the possible codes using the unlock utility from XboxScene.
cant be unlocked without the mo/bo that locked them.......UNLESS you have the passwords etc all the utilities hdunlock etc, require the password, you cant get this without the board that locked them, as it is on the eprom.
And I think a script could take eons to cycle through all of the possibilities before it found the correct password. Still a good idea though.
If someone can provide me a version of the HDUnlock utility that accepts command line arguments, I will try to write the script.
anyone tried the new evolution x dashboard versoin that lets you do that from the menu?? i do have that version but no longer have an xbox.. :-( but prob get a new one soon... hehe...
wow man good luck with the scripts, yea its a good idea, but it'll be like trying to find a needle in a haystack
