i had a similar problem when i first begun too. if nothing is working, i suggest you do install the evo dash in first. burn it on a cd-rw.. and after that, you have to know your laptop's ip address, and you xbox ip addres. post back on whats yuor laptops ip addres and you evo x ip address. you definetly need to install the evo first in your xbox.

if your box is chipped then you can connect using the slayers disk , if your want a backup of your original hard drive then dont install evox first

    my laptops - 192.168.0.2
    my evox - 192.168.0.3

    you should try
    laptop- 192.168.000.02
    and your evox 192.168.000.03
    or
    192.168.000.2
    192.168.000.3

you just gotta play around with it.. mainly your laptops ip addres, thats how i got mines to work, but you are almost there.

why don't you try pinging your xbox.
also possibly your crossover cable is bad,
    borrow a known good one.
to ping get to your command prompt
in winxp go to "run" type command and hit enter,
then type cd\ and hit enter
now type ping 192.168.0.3 make sure you use a space after ping, this way you can see if there is a connection
what operating system are you running on computer?
