I'm a bit confused as to whether Shrink v3.1.7 will back-up a "foreign" dvd.

There is the following reference in the guide:
"Under the DVD Region tab you can adjust region settings for the backup. By default DVD Shrink makes the backup region free, so usually there's no need to adjust the selections."

How do you play the foreign dvd to begin with on a Dell mid-range computer? Do you think I might need to run background software like "DVD Region-Free" before using Shrink ?

Thanks,

Richard

Foreign eh?..wink wink...nudge nudge...rip rip..grin grin..say no more.

I very much doubt you will have any problems using shrink with your "foreigner". Leave shrink to create a "region free" backup & you wont go far wrong.

One option would be to figure out who makes your burner and then install a region free hack instead of wasting money on software. Of course if you have a DVD ROM you can apply this method to it as well. Here's a link to region free firmwares of all kinds :)

ricsalt: Your 'foreign' DVD (region2-6) will 'play' in your DVD drive but you can only change the region setting '5 times'. The copy you make with 'Shrink' should be region free and you'll be able to play that without any restrictions. If you want to be able to watch and/or burn foreign DVD's on a regular basis, you'll have to choose between getting a (free) firmware patch from the Net, as Nephilim recommended, which will override the official firmware of your DVD player/burner or buy a software program like DVD Region-Free, DVD Region-Free Lite or DVD43 (free but a little more tricky). The usual warning is required if you decide to patch the firmware of your DVD player/burner: if something goes amiss during the patching you may render your DVD player/burner completely and permanently inoperable. You also can never go back to the official firmware and any warranty you may have had will now be useless. The chances of something going wrong are fairly small but it has and will continue to happen from time to time...

yea, I know. Couldn't make it any simpler. Any part of the epistle you don't understand? Are you familiar with getting a firmware patch? I am in no way as smart about this stuff as some of the experts here on Afterdawn but I'll be glad to help.

No, I'm fine with what you said. My mind is somewhat blown by the fact that region settings can be changed 5 times and then poof ! I had read a detailed piece by an Australian who spoke to this, referring to it as "madness" as in "if your computer has the madness, here is a fix for the following models...etc." It didn't sound like something I needed to worry about-ha, ha, ha -I guess I'm slow. The firmware issue is also troubling. I'm expecting my new computer next week and wouldn't want to "blow it up" on the first day.
