ALL hard drives will work, with chips turned ON, but the hard drive needs to be locked for it to be used with the chip OFF, you can lock it using an app called carpet magic(not all hard drives are lockable, maxtors seem to be very good tho)

Like lcarbutt said all hard drives will work, and now with xbox applications you can pretty much lock and unlock all mainstream brand hard drives. Of course I would stay away from mom and pap shops hard drives. But you sound like you have the right kind of hard drive in mind (Udma MAXTOR HARD DRIVE 7200RPM 80GB). This one will do just find. Some people worry about the 7200 RPM getting too hot, but I had my Maxtor hard drive which is a 7200 RPM for about a year now and it hasn't shown signs of overheating so I wouldn't worry about that.

Another thing to keep in mind is the size of the hard drive. If your planning on putting divx movies on it, along with your games an 80gb hard drive can fill up pretty quickly. You can find 120gb Maxtors on Ebay for just $10 - $20 more. But this is just up to you.

Once you find your hard drive simply install it with the Evox Hard drive Installer CD boot disk (see www.xbox-scene.com for more information).
