I had already post this in the DVD Burner Section, but I hope to get immediate help so I post it here again: I got the DD0201 and got it burning a lot of DVDs with complete success for the last five months. But three days ago, while erasing ( full erase ) a DVD+RW, I canceled the erasing of this DVD+RW and started a new erase (quick erase ). After this quick erase, this DD0201 will no longer read or write any DVD disks any more: it becomes estranged to DVD disks: it now becomes a complete CD_RW burner: it burns CDs and CD_RW OK, but becomes completely estranged to DVD just like any CD_RW Burner( without DVD functionality) would behave: the DVD functionalities just disappear from this DD0201. I do not know anything about DVD Burner technology. Is there a different laser for the DVD disks and is there a different laser for the CD disks within one DVD Burner? If so, then my guess is, since the DVD functionalities disappear from the above DD0201, the DVD laser has been turn off or not functioning correctlly. As additionaly note: there had not been any abuses to this DD0201: no physical abuse as well as no electrical mishandling abuse: the only thing that I can think of is the last cancel on the full erase of a DVD+RW disk and the start of a quick erase on the same disk. Does anyone have any ideas as of what had gone wrong? Since no abuses been applied to this DD0201, could it be that this DD0201 gives up its DVD funciontality naturally? Are there any way to recover from this DVD functionality Death? Urgent Help, Please help ! Please Help: Urgent Help !
Hi happyuser, It doesn't look like you did anything wrong to cause the burner problem. First thing to do is to go into your device manager, remove the burner drive from the system, then re-boot and let Windows re-install the drive for you. This will install the driver for the burner properly which is where the trouble might be. Jerry

I had tried to remove the drive from within Device Manager and reboot so Windows2000 auto-detects this DVD Burner, but the problem still persists. I had even tried to bring this DD0201 to another computer and the dead DVD-functionality still existed. I even tried on an old hard drive: start installing Windows 98 from this old hard drive by formating the whole of this old hard drive and Windows 98 installing, but this DD0201 still only reads and writes CD and CD_RW, but is estranged to any DVD disks inserted in it. About the cross-post across forum issue: I had accidentally post in the DVD Recorder first BEFORE discovering this DVD+RW forum. Any One has any ideas as of what had gone wrong with my DD0201? Could it be that this DD0201 will not read or write any DVD disks anymore? Is there any way to recover from this DVD-functionality death? Sounds like the burner is toasted. What manufactuer makes this "DD0201"? And how many is "a lot"? Yes that is possible. A firmware flash might do the trick. Cozza said it right on... we're here as volunteers But i'll help if I can hehe
I had tried flash the firmware to version 2.6e and this DD0201 still has the same issue. I think this DD0201 itself had given up its DVD-functionality. But is there any way I can get this DD0201's DVD-functionality back?
As a side note: I don't think that we should try to cancel on a full erase of any DVD+RW disk because if it is true that the cause of my DD0201 failure as said above is from my canceling a full erase of a DVD+RW and restart a quick erase on the same disk, then stopping a laser-burning action in the middle may cause the laser-activity no longer functions correctly as it should. Is it correct?
Optorite made this DD0201, and I had burned about one hundred DVDs so far. But my question is what would be the cause of this failure? Since there had been no abuses, could it be that just canceling on the full erase had caused such disaster? Could it be that during a full erase session, the laser beam being fired ON, and canceling in the middle may still cause it being on, and some how caused it malfunction? But if so, then why is it that this DD0201 still reads and writes very well and perfectly?

Hi happyuser Yours is not the first Optorite that has just up and died for DVD. Some have been known to keep their DVD capabilities but have lost the CD capabilities. I just searched the internet and that in the above case, inside a particular DVD Burner, even though there is only on lense, but there is a separate laser for CDs(and CD_RW) and there is a separate laser for DVDs( and DVD+RW ). My guess is, in my case, it is the laser for DVD that dies ( or stops working or malfunctions ). I bought this at a Computer show for about $94 + tax = $101.10 about five months ago and not sure I still have the receipt ( I do not think I still have the receipt because this is/was my first DVD Burner! )and do not remember whether there is a quaranty or not ( it was a retail box: I just paid the cash money and brought home this DD0201 ). Condolences to All of us who had and will have these DVD Burners for no reason give up their one and only basic function: read and write DVD disks. Well, we get what we paid for; but for less than five months with only one hundred or so DVDs burned ( no CDs being burned by this DD0201 yet ) and this DD0201 just demises of its very basic function: read and write DVDs; quitting working so early is not a good prelude to good reputation to its brand name. It is going to take us, including me, a lot of time and effort to secure all those requirements for a replacement of those dead DVD burners like this DD0201, because who would think of keeping the small piece of paper ( the receipt ) with all those busy time working and working and working. My guess is I will have to contact the persons that I bought this DD0201 from. But Optorite is lucky in this case because I had already divorced a long time ago the RECEIPT that I got when I bought this DD0201. Keep your Receipt ! Keep your Receipt ! Keep your Receipt !
Hi (not so) happyuser of DD0201... I also bought a DD0201. I could write just "one" DVD-RW (with efforts) and since then I can just burn CDs or read DVDs but not write DVDs any more. My doubt if it doesn't work due to my computer: I have a PIII 500MHz 256MB Ram Mother Soyo 7VBA-2BA3, should it work? Or should I get a PIII 800Mhz as requested by Optorite? By the way, it is an Accesstek, not Optorite, Accestek sells the devices to Optorite, and Optorite resells them. My device is still on warranty period, now I have the option to change it by a SONY DWU18A which is very similar to DD0201 except it has 2Mb buffer instead of 8Mb as Optorite has. Is this important? Any comment will be appreciatted. Thanks.
Hi CGD From your post it would be an idea to return the burner under warranty. Also upgrading the processor would be extremely beneficial as well as more ram. Video playback and recording need processor power to make it happen. My first DVD player needed a 300mhz processor to work. I tried to run it on a 266mhz machine and video play back was extremely jerky. I hope this helps
