Site update - March 16th 2010

AfterDawn.com has been updated! In addition to renewing the layout of the site we have also speeded up things considerably. The new version has been tested on our Finnish site for several months, and during the testing we have managed to improve the new version even further.

You can now enjoy this new layout at English AfterDawn.com and English Discussion Forums as well! We have also introduced new sections to the site, and re-arranged things a bit.

Still got slow speeds? try private trackers!
#205 12 Sep 2006 @ 16:22
Thanks to everyone on this thread - it has already been a huge help so far!

I have two questions:

First: I use a 12 month old G4 mac with 1.5 G ram - is there anything special I should know when using Utorrent? I have been using Azureus, but I am looking to try something different due to really slow download speeds - it may have nothing to do with Azureus, but I want to set uTorrent up with all the great tips I found here in an attempt o speed things up. Is there a particular torrent manager that is better for Macs?

Second: I seem to have a fine internet connection which is meant to get anywhere from 3500-7500 in those speed tests (for the download), but I only get around 1000 (it is meant to be High speed). This is one of the lowest speeds when they compare it with other users in my area. I have run the tests attached directly to the ethernet and via the wireless. Am I just being an idiot, or are there settings that can be changed to help? Could there be a problem with my computer.

Thank you in advance!

Ugh okay I did everything in the guide and I tried the office.org torrent speed download test and i can hit well over 500 kbps and with torrents on torrentspy.com I can barely get it over 100 sometimes 50 depending on what it is. So do I definitly have to get a private tracker to get faster speeds?

huhuhu how come my download speed is only 20-30 kBps in torrent and i have 1.4 mb download speed?? is it because i don't have a lot of seeds and peers?

hm what's the difference if you download torrent from the private tracker?
#212 25 Sep 2006 @ 19:29
private trackers make a huge difference because u get more devoted seeders and you should be able to max out your connection, which should be a little over 100 Kb/s.

Hi all,

I'm new here

I read this guide and there is something which I don't understand

what do you mean when you say download torrents with a lot of seeds and least leechers is it necessary to get high download speeds ???

I usually download torrents with lots of seeders but much more leechers so can someone explain more about that point?
#214 29 Sep 2006 @ 6:36
Seeders are only sharing/uploading, leechers are downloading the files as well as uploading.

#215 29 Sep 2006 @ 6:52
ok I know that but when I choose a torrent to download should I pick one that has lot of seeders and less leechers or it's not important ?

for example : I download fif 07 torrenet it has 700 seeders and 8000 leechers from isohunt.com so it's good or not ???
#216 29 Sep 2006 @ 6:57
Its bad, huge leech ratio, seeds must be higher than leech.

ok thanks

that's why my download speed is not high enough
#218 29 Sep 2006 @ 10:23
and you will most likely not find a good seed:leech ratio on public trackers, especially not for new releases.

#219 29 Sep 2006 @ 15:55
that's true. That's why I only download new releases even though I wanted to download something that is old.
#220 29 Sep 2006 @ 23:38
so what you're saying is that I should download torrents the moment they're released to get high speeds and to have seeds more than leeches right??
#221 30 Sep 2006 @ 2:20
He means the latest torrent's usually get jumped on by everyone when your using public trackers, and most of the time its hit-n-run leecher's, so if you want optimum speeds you have to grab the torrent at the right time, when theres less leech's than seed's.

always look for the new releases cuz that's the best option if you want to get a faster download speed in public trackers.

DVDBack23, how long it usually takes for the port to be open again after restarting my router? Cuz I restarted the router and now, I checked my speed and it says that the port is not forwarded properly. It was ok before restarting my router and now, its been like 5days now and its still blocked..

any ideas?

BTW, I went to the speed guide of UTorrent and I put 1mbit connection under the "connection type category". Now, I'm limited to only 90kbps download speed. I want to remove it but I coudln't. Its like once you've change it, you couldn't return to your previous settings. (I didn't put anything in the box before)
