Would you believe it? Now even the instructions I was attempting to follow seem to have disappeared from the web!!
This is ridiculous! It really shouldn't be this difficult to find step-by-step instructions on how to unlock a K800i for use on any network using XS++.
Can anyone direct me to a link that might do this?
As before, once I've figured it out for myself, I'll publish a 'made simple' version of what worked.
Thanks.

as someomne famous once said "listen carefullt i shall say this only once" lol!
Here are the instructions and the files to unlock your k800i CId 52 2020 for free i have just tried this on my own one locked to 3 this is a patch so if you update your phone via the se update service you will be back to square one all files need to be unzipped
these are all the files i used so i know they work
You will need the following:
SIMLockPatchGen 2
http://simox.5gbfree.com
SETOOL2LITE (v1.10)
XS++ (v3.1)
SIMLockPatchGen 2
First of all you need to create the unlock patch
Load up the software and then select the MAIN firmware you wish to make the unlock patch from (I presume that this can be any but I chose the K800_R8BA024_MAIN_GENERIC_WI_RED52.mbn), it should auto detect which phone it is for and the firmware version.
Click on Make Patch and it should create a VKP file (this is located in VKP directory inside the directory SIMLockPatchGen 2 is installed to).
Ok, now time to move on.
SETOOL2LITE
Load up the software and change the Phone Type to K800.In the right hand side tick bypass db2020 security
In the big box on the right (Files area), click on Add and select the MAIN file and then do the same again and select the FS file (make sure this corresponds to the MAIN file you created the patch from in the previous step - NOT A DIFFERENT FIRMWARE FILE).
Now, in the MISC files area, browse to the VKP file that was created before ...
Now click on the FLASH button
Connect the phone as per usual by taking out the SIM card, then the battery. Re-insert the battery and whilst holding down C button on the phone, connect it to the USB cable (other side of it should already be plugged into your computer).
Flashing will begin. After a while, it will ask you to remove the cable, remove the battery, re-insert battery, click READY and then re-connect it to the USB cable whilst holding down the C button.
Again, after another while, it will ask you about the script file, just click on the NO button to apply.
After a couple of minutes, it will be completed and you can disconnect the phone from the USB cable.
XS++
Load up the software and click Connect.
Remove the battery, re-insert battery, and then connect it to the USB cable whilst holding down the C button.
Ignore Flash File System and Main Firmware.
Instead, click on the third box (Customize File System)
Select phone model to K800
Then select CDA and Region (you can look on the left hand side and see what CDA you already have), just check in the drop down list and find the one that matches. Even if not then find the one that is closest (didn't do mine any harm).
When Ready, click Flash.
Wait a while it will say when its done disconnect all and its all done

Looks good. Thanks!
I'm off to get some sleep now and will try that tomorrow.
Will it work for CID 53 as well or does the CID 53 need a completely different approach?

I guess the K800_R8BA024_MAIN_GENERIC_WI_RED52.mbn firmware filename means it will ONLY work with EPROM CID 52 (as you suggest at the beginning of your wonderfully detailed explanation) and not the EPROM CID 53 which is what I have. So I'm a little stumped again. Also I tried to access SIMLockPatchGen 2 at http://simox.5gbfree.com but the site appears to be down!
Doh!
So I'm stuck. Again.
Any more guidance on unlocking a K800i with EPROM CID 53?

I hate having to use guesswork with so much of this! Especially when, if do it wrong, I could apparently kill the K800i (Something I may have already done...)
Story so far: I've located the files:
K800_R8BF003_MAIN_GENERIC_WI_RED53.mbn
K800_R8BF003_FS_EUROPE_5_RED53.fbn
..which is believe are the correct firmware files for a K800i on EPROM CID 53.
I've tried both XS++ and FSFlasher to load these into the phone but now only get the message:
"Configuration error. Please contact your network operator or service centre"
...once I get past the 'Normal/Fight mode" menu.
Does this error indicate I've just used the wrong files (in which case, which files SHOULD I be using for this CID 53 phone), or is the problem something else?
..and have I now killed the phone completely (expensive guesswork, this...) or can I somehow reset it again?
I'm sure this isn't supposed to be this complicated!
chavo1978's instructions appear to be very helpful, but only to those using CID 52 and only as and when the website http://simox.5gbfree.com is up and running again.

I'm a beginner myself, but think I can answer this one for you.
1. Download and Run XS++
2. Click 'connect' button then plug in your phone holding down 'c' until XS++ recognises it and says "Ready for operation"
3. Click on GDFS radio button at the bottom-left
4. Click the button marked "Phone Lock" (top-right)
With any luck, your code will revert to 0000 now.
Please let me know if this works for you; as a newbie I want to make sure any advice I give is actually RIGHT!
Good luck.

It sounds as if the phone is not being recognised by the program. As it switches to file transfer mode, it appears the physical connection to the phone is OK.
Try this:
Switch off the phone and remove the battery then re-insert re battery a few seconds later (this is important and I forgot to tell you last time! Sorry.) THEN follow my earlier instructions.
Hopefully this time when you press and hold 'c' the computer WILL connect to it.
Keep me informed!

bubbles, first of all I've downloaded another version of XS++,more precisely>3.2....i've also removed the battery for about 20 seconds,then...> connect>pressed C>connected the phone> Error: Cannot open phone communication port
20:11:25| Disconnected... Unplug the phone
what could be the reason?...maybe this version doesn't support my phone....but v4.1 beta works only for Linux...
xo....what next:D?

Hmm. Have you got flash drivers installed, I wonder? These are needed for the computer to flash the phone.
I think if you install the software that came with the phone (or you can download this from Sony Ericcsson) it automatically installs the necessary flash drivers. (I know that I've never needed to install them manually and have managed to flash our phone so this does appear to be right.)
Also I'm running XS++ 3.1 on Windoze (only cos there's no Mac version available - Doh!) so your version 3.2 should certainly be 'man enough' for the job.
Key point: When I connect the phone to Windows (remember to remove and replace the battery each time you try - the phones are silly like that) Windoze almost always goes 'pling' and then XS++ recognises it. If Windoze fails to go 'pling' then XS++ fails too.
So listen for the 'pling'!
Good luck!
(Any other ideas from other users would be welcome ... I'm only a newbie myself!)

Aw shucks! Thanks!
I'm glad it worked for you. I know what it's like struggling 'in the dark' with something like this. I've spent many frustrating hours (who am I kidding ... days, weeks even!) trying to figure out how to do what seems like pretty simple stuff and nothing seems to work.
Now I need to get back to trying to work out how to unlock the K800i (EPROM 53) from it's current network! This has been ongoing for weeks now and I'm making small steps forward every day. It just seems to be such a slow process!
People on this and other forums have been great; it's just when you're give a list of '10 simple steps' ... and step 2 doesn't seems to work as planned ... that it's gets frustrating!
Onwards & upwards!
