Hello all i've been doing DVD to VCD encodeing for a long time now, but recently I got into divx. I'm rather knowlegable about both however now I would like to make svcds. I used the guide for DVD to SVCD with tmpgenc and got horrible results. I was wondering what a good encoder would be for svcd, and also how to turn a DivX file from an avi extension to a mpeg4 extension.

I can't post my settings now im useing a shared machine at work my settings are on my home pc. I followed the guide on this website. My video had problems with motion and with the audio being off. i posted questions about it before and dela responded quite a few times and we came to the conclusion i should use a different encoder. Also for the mpeg 4 im not sure raw or not i was trying to change my divx movie to have a mpeg extension to burn it to dvd-r. If thats even possible. I was under the impression that dvd format is inherintly mpeg 4 video. Im new at svcd, and mpeg4. So i hope im not sounding to ignorant.

ohh so mpeg 4 essential is a divx avi? is that right or am i reading wrong.
mpeg 2 is original dvd format or no?
vcd seems so easy this stuff seems a little more complicated.

    you're right.

    *more info*
-divx, xvid, 3ivx is all mpeg4.
-Avi is a container to put the video and audio and subtitle. its like a folder that plays the video for you.
-dvd is in mpeg2, and contained in .vob, audio is in ac3 or mpeg1 layer II

where is the fun un one click and your done apps. learn and tweak your video.

okay im following, and sorry for the late response. Now my next question is whats the best encoder and settings for encodeing all the divx movies i've made to svcd. Wouldn't svcd be best if a dvd is mpeg2?

    the best setting ?.....
it really depends on the eye of the beholder.
you need to experiment this yourself.
do a little more browsing and you might find some of my settings posts.
check the limits of your dvd player, what i mean is if it will read xsvcd, an uncompliant type of svcd, basically its at 720x480 or 704x480 for NTSC, unlike the usual 480x480.

    i use tmpgenc, for svcd.

    have fun

DivX is a subset of the MPEG4 specificatin (for more info visit http://www.hazza.dsl.pipex.com/faq.htm#VIDEO )

CCE is one of the best encoders however TMPGEnc, for most people, is more than a good enough encoder for such tasks. Dont forget you can always do a AVI->SVCD (http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/43085 )
