OK, hi guys, I have the latest version of Nero out and I have NEC 1300A DVD RW burner. I have downloaded the latest firmware-1.0B. NERO STILL SAYS ILLEGAL DISC ERROR. THe illegal disc error happened when I used fugifilm, so I bought TDK DVD+RW (2.4x)the tdk is the recommended media for this drive and STILL THE ILLEGAL DISC error. I don't know what to do, i feel like smashing the drive to pieces. Also i noticed that in MY COMPUTER it doesnt say DVD drive it says CD drive for the NEC. I am lost. NERO is the latest version, so is the firmware, the media is good, I just don't know. please help, i know this is a very common topic, but i just couldnt find the answers. thank YOU

Can you post a Nero log with the errors in it?

does it say this when you first start the pc? And what other software are you using? Try uninstalling your burner, rebooting and letting XP re-install it, then reboot again.

    mindgod,

First thing is ... you need to edit your post. Edit the numbers in the beginning that start with 1A2# .. this is I believe your serial number.

Again, do you get this when you first start up your pc? Or, only after you attempt to burn and it fails?

Where did you download this firmware?

Hey mindgog. I'm gonna go out on a limb here. You said you are burning DVD+RW. Are you sure your burner supports this format or is it just for DVD-R and DVD-RW? Just a thought.

I got the firmware from cdfreaks.com and the CD drive message is only in MY COMPUTER, not in Nero. NOw it says DVD-RW. Weird. Guys, this seems to be a random drive! lol, I was able to create a dvd with tdk dvd+rw today. then i tried another movie, and it said illegal disc error with another disc. I am sure it is not the media. There is something wrong somewhere... Also if it does not work with Nero, I try it with dvd decrypter and it still doesn't work. Do you guys think i need a new drive, this one is not that old.

The NEC 1300A is a dual format burner. Also at times my drive shows up as a cd drive ... I just have to refresh the window.

Also that forceaspi link is down at times ... try this link: http://wombleintheuk.tripod.com/Final/ForceASPI/ForceASPI.htm

Yea, I downloaded the ASPI and did the check and everything is properly installed. But i STILL get the illegal disc error with nero burning.

Have you been using the same RW over and over or have you tried using other media? Your log suggests the burner isn't liking the media too well.

I also noticed from your log that you have your burner slave to the hard drive which could possibly cause problems. The ideal placement would be for the NEC to be set as master on the secondary IDE.

thanks for the reply, I tried two medias: fujifilm dvd+Rw and the tdk. Same probem, and these are supposed to be very reliable medias. Thanks for the suggestion on slave/drive, how do you set the drive on master? thanks.

You have Nero InCD installed. This is a known problem that often causes DVD burning problems. Since you are having problems it should be uninstalled.

You probably wonder why Nero includes with their DVD burning software another program that causes it to fail. That's a good question. It just depends on what you are using your drive for. But basically any packet writing software of that type can cause problems for DVD backup and should not be used. That is why it is a separate download.

YEs! I do have INCD installed, but how can it cause problems? I tried to format through INCD and it did not work either: it said Illegal disc: either disc is scratched or check compatibility. But i will uninstall it and try again. If that fails, do you guys think i should get another drive. Pleae recommend one that WILL work lol. with tdk thanks this forum rocks.

Formatting a CD or DVD and using packet writing software like InCD so that the disc can be used as a removable "hard disc or hard floppy" is a completely different thing than making a backup of a CD or DVD.

The software that does the first option is very often incompatable with and causes problems doing the second option. You often have to decide what you really want to do knowing that if choose to have the first option available you may have problems with the second.

THANK YOU! I just uninstalled INCD and so far i backed up STARSKY AND HUTCH and got no errors. One more question: THen why did DVD decrypter not be able to format the disc? because of incd too? and why does nero make incd if it cannot format tdks? Because i tried to make a format of tdk through incd and it said: incompatible. Is INCD a useless program?

    thanks immensely for your help.
