Hi, I'm a total newbie to this so please don't flame me...
I installed virtualdub v. 1.5.10 (the newest one I think), now when I tried to open a movie I got an error message saying: "couldn't locate decompressor for format 'XVID'(unknown) ..."
then it says it needs (VFW) compatible codecs or whatever. I checked with GSpot and I seem to have Xvid installed, but not VFW... so what do I need to do? I run win xp pro (if that matters), and I have k-lite codec pack (the standard version). Thanks.

Codec troubles? try installing FFDShow, it might fix it for you!

If I were you I would delete all codec packs, completely get rid of the xvid you have installed, and download Koepi's development build here or on his website (www.koepi.org). And definately also download FFdshow for playback. BTW you should probably use VirtualdubMod latest release (build 2439 as of now). If you do a clean install of both VDmod and xvid it should work just fine. Since you are new to this, try this xvid guide http://www.doom9.org/xvid-guides.htm .

Agreed, they cause much more trouble than they ever fixed!
