I wanted to create a media library on my computer from the DVDs I own ... so I ripped many of them onto HDD. I used DVD Ripper in file mode - selected Main + IFO. These files are played w/o problmes by WinDVD (just need to specify the title). However, I am running short on the HD space and wanted to compress some of them with the idea that they will be played directly from HDD (so I do not care about special frame rates/calculations). I tried using Dr Divx - the problem is that for a lot of them the audio and video is out of synch since Dr Divx does not recognize starting point correctly ( and there is no way to specify one for ex. by title). I was wondering if there is/are a program that can rip dvds and convert them to MPEG4 to be stored on HDD in real-time or one that would take exeisting VOD files with IFO and compress them to MPEG4 or finaly the one that can take VOD file and remove all unnecessary information so it has a valid start point (which can be later used in Dr Divx). Any help is appreciated!

you might wanna try out Vidomi encoder, available at http://www.vidomi.com it has always seemed to work for me, and you can select all the vob files that you want in there and choose between a ton of codecs. if you are planning to put them in divx, you might wanna also grab yourself a copy of Bincsoft Bitrate Calculator, available at http://www.bincsoft.com/

I also bought the DivX 5.2 codec which will show up in the above ripper after you install it. Works great with just the default settings in the ripper for DivX and you can fit 4 to 5 movies on a single DVD,in Dolby Surround Sound too! or just leave them on a hard drive and play them from there! and the video quality is great! I use the DivX player for playing the movies, but you can also use Microsoft's Media Player also. The person above having problems with the sync of the video and audio, this ripper has an option that you can check that will sync them so they are not out of wack! Stick with DivX since Microsoft has the MPEG-4 format hard to deal with because of all the security and protection schemes they have with it. GO With DivX!
i can do all that for free. you bought divx ? i guess you're supporting them... anyway their free trial for the pro version is 6 months. they're not planning to keep a version longer than that, anyway you should reinstall windows by that time period. Windows media is crap in quality, at least to me.
