Rural telephone company offering gigabit Internet connection for $35

Rural telephone company offering gigabit Internet connection for $35 The Vermont Telephone Co. (VTel) has begun offering gigabit Internet for just $35 a month, undercutting the only other company that offers such fast speeds, Google.
VTel only has a footprint that covers 17,500 home in the state of Vermont, and the company says 600 homes have signed up.

CEO Michael Guite says he has made it his mission to upgrade the company's phone network to fiber. The company was founded in the 1890s.

Using $94 million in federal stimulus awards for broadband, the company has invested in 1200 miles of fiber.

Vtel is one of 700 rural telephone companies to make a similar switch, but their offering is the fastest. Google offers gigabit fiber in Austin, Texas and Kansas City, for $70 per month or for slightly more bundled with TV.

I agree. More competition is definitely needed. We basically only have one option where I live, Charter. If you like to use your internet in the middle of the night, or the wee hours of the early morning it's great. If you like to use it during normal hours however, it sucks. I guess I'm not sure how these cable company's get such a monopoly in certain areas like they do.

funny that US govt allows such a high-speed connection, and cry against piracy at the same time. what most people gonna do with such high-speed you think? legal downloads or illegal ones?

I wonder though. Just because you have gig on your end does that always make much difference when the connection somewhere between you and the other side is much slower anyway?

Well no. If you are surfing to a site in another part of the country or overseas and that data has to travel at some point through slower switches and cables then that will be what limits your speed. Your connection to your supplier might be good but it depends on the connection to everywhere else.
