Xbox One will work without Kinect switched on

Microsoft has revealed that the Xbox One console will not require the Kinect device to be switched on at all times to function, seemingly going back on another requirement that was very unpopular among gamers.
The news that the Xbox One console would require the Kinect to be switched on and gathering data at all times sparked some cries over privacy fears from gamers. At the same time, limits on the usage of pre-owned games and other details were met with a cold response from the community.

Microsoft eventually backtracked on its pre-owned games limitations, and now appears to have done the same for any requirement for Kinect to be on all the time.

"Like online, the console will still function if Kinect isn't plugged in," Xbox One platform architect Marc Whitten, told IGN. "Although you won't be able to use any feature or experience that explicitly uses the sensor."

"You have the ability to completely turn the sensor off in your settings. When in this mode, the sensor is not collecting any information. Any functionality that relies on voice, video, gesture or more won't work. We still support using it for IR blasting in this mode. You can turn the sensor back on at any time through settings, and if you enter into a required Kinect experience (like Kinect Sports Rivals for instance), you'll get a message asking if you want to turn the sensor back on in order to continue."

Then why the hell are consumers REQUIRED to purchase one? Offer the 'Box without the spycam at PS4 prices, and you might get a few more out the door!

I think they put so much work into the gestures and voice features of Xbox One at this point that not bundling it would require a major UI change or something. Maybe not. It certainly would make it more competitive price wise with PS4 so maybe they will back track on that too?

Well, they said it would work without it plugged in now, so I'm guessing they're doing the backwards shuffle again and it'll eventually lead to an "arcade"? model that is kinect-free...

It's amazing that with all of the mistakes Sony made with the PS3 launch, Microsoft seems to be trying really hard to outdo them.

If you look closely, you can see what looks like a cord leading from the left rear of the Kinect base towards the rear of the shot.

The damage has already been done. The "always online" and "auto-kinect" flaws have deter many gamers. But Xbox has to count on its fine game-makers to help them sell the consoles by making superb games.

True.
Since clearly M$ is playing from the PS3 launch playbook. I wouldn't doubt that as they back down from all these always on/DRM/No used game play schemes to save face and recover sales. as time goes on they will most definitely reinstate them slowly but surely. And claim they had no choice.

And really M$ won't care by then because suckers will have bought in to their kool-aid and invested into the system and games by then. Just like when Sony started to take away features from the PS3 little by little over the first few years.

Honestly if anyone that buys into this marketing ploy that they are turning a new leaf and buys an Xbox One is an idiot. They will reinstate every last one of the things they are changing. they will slip them in under your nose and sure...you'll be pissed about it but what are you going to do about it after you spent $400 to $500 on the system, renewed XBL for a year, $100 on extra controllers, and $300+ on a few games at $70 a pop?

You're not going to do jack sh!t. And they know it. By then you are too far bought in. And they will laugh all the way to the bank because you bought their B.S.. Remember, they did NOT stop or deactivate DRM on used games. Their words were very selective and manipulative. No used games lock out is still VERY much on the Xbox One. they are leaving it up to each individual developer to make that choice. That's an excuse for them to say "whaaaaat? we didn't do it, EA did. Don't look at us." If they were serious they would take the "ability" completely off the system. But they didn't. Because they are hoping to God you are all ignorant enough to buy their system.

jookycola's exactly right. This marketing crap is nothing but hype to fool whomever they can.

I wouldn't touch this M$ crap with a 10 foot pole and you pushing.

Will agree with jookycola on this one. The greed of MS will get the better of them!
