I'm thinking of buying a new ps3 160 gb but want to install CFW afterwards. What is the default firmware version of the 160gb systems? Will I be able to install CFW or does it already have a firmware that is past 3.55? TY!

Depends on where you get it from. If the store doesnt sell many then you might be lucky to get one with 3.55 but ones out of the factory now will most likely be 3.60

Also you can not tell what firmware is on the ps3 from the box. Only option is to find someone who will be buying a ps3 for official use and ask them if they can contact you to tell you which firmware is on it. Of course its better if you have a friend or family member who is going to buy one. But if not then you could look like a weirdo and hang around game stores and wait for a random person to come buy one.

you could try going to a small store and ask them to check for you. Some of them might do it to get a sale cos otherwise you would leave without spending money at their store, so they probably will open one to get you to buy it.

Not sure, but you might be able to buy one, turn it on, and see what firmware it is based on the EULA it makes you agree to...if it is 3.60, don't agree to the EULA and bring it back to the store saying that the EULA terms are unacceptable.
