I recently made my first rip and encoded it in divx5 following the guide on this website. After encoding it overnight I look and see the 2 pass movie size is around 2gb. When I follow the guide to split it in half the file sizes are way bigger then what would fit on 1 cd. What did I do wrong?

Check the size of your audio files. I had similar problem and found CDex was not ripping the original WAV files to WAV wrapped mp3 files (RiffWAV). They audio files were HUGE (WAV). The audio opened with VirtualDub should be around 1mb per minute of movie (for 160kbps).
