My old Hitachi drive used to read all backups no matter what brand and never ever gave me any sort of trouble. I was just playing a backup of forza last night and it worked fine. this morning i popped in original crackdown to play halo 3 beta and after that I put in forza 2 again only to see that it was an "unplayable disc." You cannot imagine how pissed off I was when this happened :( now I'm just disappointed and trying to see if I can fix it. Any help would be appreciated, and I'm willing to reward anyone that successfully helps me with access to a certain site. (PM)

Most likely the laser is going bad. That's real common with old Hitachi drives.

I've heard of people using new lasers and still having issues. If I were you I would just buy a new dvd-rom and flash it with your old key.

is that easier or more complicated than just swapping out the laser. I'm sure its more expensive.....
