Acceptable AT&T Router replacement?

Does anyone know of an acceptable AT&T router replacement? I'm not sure which models work and which don't. I don't mind spending around $150 but not much more than that. Need faster internal speeds (for internal data transfers/media streaming) with good distance, so an AC router would be ideal. I'm sick of paying their ~$8 rental fee for their crappy routers. I was made to believe that only certain models would work so any advice if you've done this or know of a good model is appreciated!
