    Hi All!

I have to admit, I am not technically minded, so please bear with me.

I purchased a 1.5 Terrabyte external hard drive (HP, 2.0 USB port) as the PS3 I have is only a 40G hard drive and I wanted additional space for saving games, etc. I was told it should automatically register when I plug the USB port for the external into my PS3, but it didn't. I partitioned the drive to the FAT32 that I found on an online guide and tried that. I have the required folders, GAME, MUSIC, VIDEO, PICTURES, plus a folder 'PS3' with the required subfolders. Now the external is being recognized, I have access to the images and music I've stored on the external, but I just don't know if I can save my game data to the external. Have I gone wrong somewhere and if so, what can I do to fix the issues I have of not being able to copy and save my game data to the external. All I want is the extra storage space for gaming, nothing else. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks,
    3

If your PS3 is not modded, you won't be able to do much more than use the external for movies, pictures, music, etc. Just media stuff.

If you mod it, then you can copy your your games to it and run them from there (plus a lot of other stuff). To do this, your PS3's firmware can't be higher than 3.55.

No I haven't modded it at all, no idea how to do that, so thank you for letting me know, will attempt to mod it. The firmware isn't higher than 3.55, although it's close. Thanks again to you both!

Hmm looks like my post wasnt added from earlier.

The PS3 needs to install game data for some games, this can only be done on the internal hdd.

What you heard about games on external hdd is about modded PS3s and backing up game discs on the hdd. But games which require game data to be installed will still ask you to install the data on the internal hdd. There is no way to install game data on external hdd yet.

So you can do 2 things, 1), return the hdd you have and buy a 2.5" hdd. Make sure it's 9.5mm high not 12mm, as 12mm do not fix in the ps3. Some 750gb ones are 12mm, and I believe all 1tb are 12mm but may be one or 2 that are 9.5mm.
Then take out the 40gb one from your PS3 and put in the new hdd, very easy to swap hdds so no need to worry if you arent good with tech.
If you want to keep your old games saves you will need to backup your data to an external hdd, backups vary in size, but you'll probably need 20gb space. When you swap hdd you can then restore the backup onto the new hdd.

Or 2), delete old game data of games you have completed or wont be playing for a while to make space for new game data. Also delete game patches and old save files you dont need.

Also make sure you are on firmware 3.55, as only that and lower firmware can be hacked and modded with cfw. Anything higher and it needs to be downgraded first. If you are able to mod your PS3 remember to diable auto updates from the setting to prevent it from downloading and installing the latest firmwares.

here everything you need to know to mod your ps3:

    http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/arc...ation_3_custom_firmware_3_55_run_homebrew.cfm

But if you are on 3.41 leave you ps3 alone for now and wait, keep an eye on the forums and if you read that jwf-dh firmware works then install that instead of kmeaw-the cfw in link given. Give it a week or 2, and if nothing comes up then install kmeaw.

you don't have to return your hard drive! All you need to do is buy a male/female Sata cable ($2) and take out your 40gb HD, and jimmy rig the sata cable into the slot going to your 1.5tb HD. You need to buy a case for your 3.5" HD that has a power supply. This is what Ive done and works great!
