I never used to get this error until recently when I reformatted my computer and reinstalled Premiere Pro CS2. That made me figure that I had a codec missing or something. I was able to find two ways of doing this:

    1. Use Adobe Premiere Elements - for some reason it works fine in this when it didn't in PPro. Much of my work is dependent upon PPro projects so using this for me was not an option.

    2. I installed the K-Lite Codec Pack Full (here). In the installation settings I selected all boxes under the categories that said they had to do with video/audio encoding. I'm not sure if those selections helped, but after I installed these codecs PPro imported my files just fine.

    I hope this helps.
