    Hello,

I'm trying to help out my boss by replacing his dvd-rom laser, in the ps2.

He's got a much older version of the ps2, not sure which; but it doesn't read dvd-r/rw...
Does it matter which laser he purchases? Are there certain lasers that works in certain drives? Are there certain drives per version or PS2?

He wants to be able to read dvd +/- r/rw...

I already searched around and didn't find any verification or clarity on the questions above... Please help, I don't want to mess it up... he's my boss.

    Thanks,

    Matt

Yes there are 2 or 3 different laser types for different version.

When you look at them online it should ask you what version you want or tell you.

It might not read +r or -/+rw

    It will read dvd-r tho.

You may just have to clean the laser or adjust it instaed of buying a new laser and that might help it to read.

oh, i must've gotten the two confused then... it must read - and not +... or he has severe issues with +...

anyway, can i replace just the laser in order to get it to work?

does anyone have a link to a page that tells you which PS2 versions support which lasers/drives?

    Thanks again,
    Matt

    Right version 1-4 uses a KHS-400B Laser,
    version5/6/7 uses a KHS-400C laser,
KHS-400r is the alternative for some version 5-8 ps2's, can only be found out once ps2 is opened.

Ebay is the best place to buy lasers as they are only about £25 and they are easy to fit yourself.

Bare in mind you will have to desolder 2 points on the laser to remove the anti-static protection thing.

You will have to find out what version ps2 he has got 1st though.
